BRIT forges special relationship with Sporting Memories Foundation ahead of the BRIT Challenge

We are delighted to be forging a special relationship with The Sporting Memories Foundation.

For 10 years, the Sporting Memories Foundation has used the power of remembering and talking about sport – along with physical exercise – to tackle dementia, depression and loneliness for elderly people and communities.

They operate and support localised online or community-based clubs to support elderly people who may be isolated, or living with depression, dementia or other long-term conditions to improve their lives by providing a welcoming and fun environment.

They also run campaigns and projects, and work in partnership with organisations to help extend their work across the UK and beyond, from sporting bodies such as the Professional Footballers Association and professional clubs to local community organisations and care providers.

Sporting Memories also have a strong volunteer community who often go above and beyond to help run sessions for elderly people in their local communities to enjoy.

Chris Wilkins, Co-Founder of Sporting Memories Foundation, said:

“We are delighted to be started an exciting new relationship with The British Inspiration Trust (BRIT) ahead of the annual BRIT Challenge, which is being delivered to support and improve young adult and student mental health and fitness throughout the UK.

It is great that the BRIT Challenge has been designed to be inclusive and enable students and staff of all abilities to participate and work as a team to cover the 2,022 mile distance in a number of sporting ways.

We also look forward to exploring ways in which our own Sporting Memories network can take part in the BRIT Challenge from our staff and our brilliant volunteers and supporters.

Teams taking part in the BRIT Challenge will be invited to choose a second charity to raise funds for, alongside BRIT and we would be thrilled if university and college teams choose us at Sporting Memories as the other charity of their choice to raise funds for, alongside BRIT.

We also hope that our work will engage students and staff involved in the BRIT Challenge who might like to volunteer at one of our clubs throughout England, Scotland and Wales as part of their community volunteering and charitable work; especially those students and staff who love sport.”

There are over 80 Sporting Memories Clubs across Scotland, Wales and England. The supportive, welcoming and structured sessions they offer are often proven to help build cognitive resilience for those living with dementia. Mental and physical well-being increases too.
