We are thrilled to be entering into a special relationship with Goalball UK and delighted that Mark Winder, Secretary General/Chief Executive of Goalball UK, is supporting BRIT and our BRIT 2021 Challenge.
The BRIT 2021 Challenge has been designed to be inclusive so that students and young adults of all abilities are able to take part. Support from our partner education and sport national governing bodies has been tremendous and we are excited that Goalball UK will be championing the BRIT 2021 Challenge and promoting the opportunity for students and young adults who are blind or visually impaired to participate.
Goalball is a fast paced, action packed, three-a-side indoor game of attack and defence for blind and partially sighted players. The non-invasive game is played with an audible ball, on a tactile court with all players wearing blackout eyeshades.
The aim of the game is to throw the ball (along the floor) into the opposition’s goal while defending your own. The team with the most goals wins. At elite level the game is played over two halves of 12 minutes each according to the stop clock, so usually lasting for approximately 50 minutes.
Goalball was invented in 1946 to help the rehabilitation of blinded war veterans. It was introduced to the Paralympics in 1976 and is the only sport specifically designed for visually impaired (VI) athletes, rather than an adaptation of another sport.
Goalball is a great sport for developing confidence, teamwork, communication and social skills in children and young people of all ages and abilities. Goalball UK, the national governing body and charity for the sport, can help if you are looking at setting up your own goalball club, or introducing goalball into your curriculum.
