The University of Liverpool embraces and champions the BRIT 2021 Challenge

We are are delighted that the University of Liverpool are embracing and championing the BRIT 2021 Challenge.

It was pleasure to visit Liverpool in February 2020, as part of the BRIT 2020 Row Britannia Challenge and our 5-month tour of UK universities and colleges. The support in Liverpool was fantastic and we were hosted by Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool University and Liverpool Hope University.

The visit to the University of Liverpool was a great success and we were sincerely grateful to Stuart Wade, Sport Development Manager, for coordinating the visit. It was great to spend time with Andy Craig, Director of Sport, and meet members of his team and representatives from the university's Athletic Union (AU).

Sport Liverpool offers more than 50 different sports for students to get involved with during their time at the University of Liverpool.

We are delighted that Amy Hughes, AU President, and Ohio Orumen, AU Vice-President, have shown such enthusiasm to promote the BRIT 2021 Challenge and encourage as many students as possible to take part.

Our aspiration is that the BRIT 2021 Challenge is an inclusive feel-good fundraiser for students and staff of all abilities to take part in.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, students and staff throughout the UK do not have normal access to sports or facilities on campuses. We have therefore designed the BRIT 2021 Challenge so that students and staff can take part wherever they are and add the distances they complete to their team's 2,021 mile target.

Universities and colleges are registering for the BRIT 2021 Challenge as institutions, however many of their clubs, teams, societies and departments are entering sub-teams and completing their own 2,021 mile targets. We are recommending just one university of college Virgin Money Giving page so that if there are multiple teams within one institution, they are all contributing to one fundraising target.

The University of Liverpool are adopting a whole university approach to taking on the BRIT 2021 Challenge and we are grateful to Richard Finch, Communications Officer, for his support to raise awareness of the challenge within the university, the Liverpool Guild of Students (the students' union of the University of Liverpool) and the City of Liverpool.

The support from the University of Liverpool over the past two years has been tremendous and we are delighted that Professor Dame Janet Beer, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, is championing and supporting the BRIT 2021 Challenge. We are also grateful to Lindsey Sergeant, Executive Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor, for all her help.

"In addition to the physical impact of COVID-19, a growing area of concern is the effect of the pandemic on individual mental health and well-being. Good mental health is linked to good physical health and both support positive social and economic outcomes for individuals and society.

I am delighted to support the BRIT 2021 Challenge campaign, an inclusive and inspiring UK-wide fundraising activity which aims to raise funds for mental health charities and promote positive awareness of mental health, fitness and well-being.

The University of Liverpool registered a team for the BRIT 2020 Row Britannia Challenge in March but our students were unable to complete the event and reach their fundraising target, due to the nationwide lockdown.

We will be encouraging our students to participate in the BRIT 2021 Challenge, be that on campus or at home, to support their mental and physical health as well as contributing to the fundraising effort for BRIT’s partner charities."
